sorry I mean appropriated from...

Hello Darkness
Hello Sunshine
Hello Not all All
Hello All the Time
Hello Nowhere
Hello Oblivion
Hello Goodbye...

Who shoot biggie smalls? If we don't get 'em they gonna kill us all!
I'm down for running up on those crackers and their city hall!

Daydream, I feel asleep between the flowers...
for a couple of hours, what a beautiful day!

To finish off Lyrics taken from
Gnarls Barkley: The Odd Couple...

I don't know what matters to you at this moment...
but that's all that matters to me.

Anyone that needs what they want,
and doesn’t want what they need
I want nothing to do with

Somebody’s watching. Maybe you want em to see you
But with your regrets and secrets you don’t really want them to be you.

Here Be Spoilers

Please the world
the way you can
pleasure is good
for everyone

It is a distinct possibility
that the world has
always been this fucked up
and never deviated from
its current course one iota.

I guess it's our job as to try
as hard as we can
to make it better
no matter how futile
this may seem...

A small job/effort now
may produce marvellous
results in years to come
but that is not a certainty

Your payback may not come
assumption is a form of laziness
seek out the truth
and new thoughts
but don't think you own them

nobody knows the answers
except for what they have proven
you may know for yourself
but may never be able to explain

The future is unwritten...
except for the part where
we all die!

Freedom!

...as long as you don't try to use it.

...a great excuse to start a war.
...a very debatable concept.

...never here?

Viewer Discretion Is Advised

Preserved By Death!!

First in an undetermined series of recycled off cuts, not worthy to adorn the crest of this fine online journal of self-indulgent nonsensical mental indiscretions indecisively strewn from start to finish in a haphazard fashion, liable to change at random.

Learn to question...

We can deny our heritage and our history, but we cannot escape responsibility for the result.

No one can terrorise a whole nation, unless we are all his accomplices.

We must not confuse dissent with disloyalty.

A nation of sheep begets a government of wolves.

We cannot defend freedom abroad by deserting it at home.

The Synthetic Age
In modern times we have managed to replicate many aspects of the past, except for the quality.

Material Fetishism
If the oppressed masses of the world were to unite or form a class consciousness, present power structures would be meaningless as they are based almost solely on an unequal distribution of wealth, and not as we are sometimes informed based on natural talents and abilities. If you really believe that vast wealth can be accumulated via 'hard work' or 'risk-taking' then shouldn't all inheritance be outlawed as it discourages people from both of those things. It only encourages people to jump vehemently to the defence of so-called 'property rights' and strongly resist any attempts to redistribute wealth...
Interaction of politics and economics...
RIP Zimbabwe, Burma, etc...

notes from the edge...
inside the thought factory...
Production line of the mind...
Mixing up storm, brewing up a cuppa....
Too busy, as always. Time/money paradox
Need more time,
but this must be sacrificed to obtain money.
Which is required to acquire possessions
which can be used to enjoy time.
Which you can't use
'cause you are too busy trying to get more money!
Endless cycle of labour
used to further others aims.
Means to an end.
Our forebears had it worse.
Who am I to complain?
A moaning whinger I assume...
The odds of winning the lottery aren't even worth a chance...
But we'll risk it as much as we can
for a opportunity to break out.
Is boredom better than being in pain
or would that at least provide some sort of stimulation
which is preferable
to the absence of any feeling or excitement.
Go on without me
I'll only drag you down
to my level
of wonder
at what is
and what isn't.

First they came for the Communists, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Communist. Then they came for the Jews, and I didn't speak up, because I wasn't a Jew. Then they came for the Catholics, and I didn't speak up, because I was a Protestant. Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me.

Everything Is Temporary

The struggle for transcendence...

Suffering is normal
Pain is normal

The sooner we can collectively realise these truths
the sooner we may think of ourselves less as victims
and stop attacking each other because we feel threatened
or attack because we fear that we will be attacked
or think that we have already been...

Do I really want to believe the truth?
or just a compromised version of the truth
that allows me to continue to do what I want to do?

Got no regrets... except I wish you we're here with me...

NB:If you haven't done so already...
Watch "Children Of Men" the 2006 movie starring Clive Owen.
It is definitely one of the best films I have ever seen!

2008 Comeback Special!

...Post Tour Post...

Siamese Dream:
Just came back on an 11 hour flight from Bangkok yesterday and broke my own record by watching 6 movies, that is while still accepting all meals, drinks and hot towels provided. I think I'm in the mood for some lists so I will start by reciting the movies I watched (in order):
  • Music Within
  • Juno
  • Lions for Lambs
  • Alvin and the chipmunks
  • August Rush
  • Being John Malkovich

I was proud of all of them (not that I made them, more proud of the choices) except for one which I wanted to stop watching almost immediately but held out and watched the whole thing. I should have remembered what I learnt in economics: if you don't enjoy a movie, you gain nothing by watching the whole thing (sunk costs). So all are good except one, see if you can pick it (one of these things just don't belong here...)

I'll give you a clue it's about little furry creatures who sing. I blame Jason Lee and David Cross, I thought (stupidly) a movie with those two in it can't be all bad, how wrong I was. Also I'd already seen 'Being John Malkovich' many times, but it is so freaking awesome, even/especially after not sleeping for almost 24 hours! Love the 7 1/2 floor documentary!

Reverse Culture Shock:

Good to be able to drink from the tap again and see the family, but what's with the temperature and where are the 7-Eleven's? Where are the people? Auckland Airport was like a ghost town, almost saw tumble weed roll past. I guess I'm more used to huge crowds at the moment and having push my way through people on the sky train. At least there are no mosquitoes, but there ain't much sun. I know those aren't wild revelations to those from NZ, but they are initial first re-impressions after being away for 3 months. Then I turn on TV today and saw an ad where people introduce themselves as Bob, Ted and Bill your local mechanics, and cracked up laughing, you don't see stuff like that in a country with more than 80 million people... I don't think I'd seen an 'infomercial' for 3 months either.

So as you may guess I have more time on my hands and in a far more talkative mood than usual, so expect maybe some photos, facts or tales from my travels. But the best of the stories will only be told verbally, after imbibing various fluids.

I guess I only really like this photo of Khaosan Rd by day, because it has the cop looking staunch (anyone remember CHiPs?) and shows the amount of people walking on the street that taxis and tuk-tuks still try to use. It's abit busier at night.

If you are bored find these things in the picture:
(sort of like Where's Wally?)
  • Jazzcrew
  • Diving Infomation
  • Tuk-tuk men trying to pick me up
  • Bald man with a bum bag
  • As many umbrellas as you can
  • Starbucks (satan's brew)
  • Tatoo place

The Optic Array Before Us

It is not natural to always be rational, but it is wise to try!

As I have been promising for the last few years to tell you all the easy answers (without ever telling you the simple questions) I now take his opportunity to disappoint you all by finally revealing what these questions and (of course) answers really are. Now they may not apply to you personally, but they bloody do because I (and people far smarter than me) say so. So don't try and wiggle your way out of this one, by saying that is load of crap that has nothing to do with me/you! Now that this intro has imploded on itself, run out of steam, bitten the bullet and so forth, I bring you: (drum roll ensues)

"The Easy Answers"
...to the three most important vague questions
we can generally ask about life.

  • What can I know?
  • What ought I do?
  • What may I hope for?

So guess for yourself...

and then check out...
"The Easy Answers"...
as listed below....

  • What can I know? Nothing is for sure
  • What ought I do? Try not to hurt anyone
  • What may I hope for? For the best (but it won't make any difference)

Glad I could clear that up for everyone*

Remorse Code

Quotes from "The Demon" By Hubert Selby Jr.

Tensions and nameless fears...

...no one would know what was said. But the feelings would be remembered, as feelings always are, long after the words and the circumstances have passed beyond recall.

Memories, like ancient history, can easily disappear when their when their pertinence to today is ignored, and then they eventually reappear and become current events.

Then the morning and the goddamn feelings of guilt and remorse that churn your sweating body and dull your mind without ever really identifying themselves...

There never is a real difference between ancient history and current events. There are only variations; the theme is always the same.

...the terrible conflict as he became a battleground for the hounds of heaven and the hounds of hell...

Year of the Rat/ Subprime Credit Crunch

the joy of pain

the pain of joy

Just do it! ( I know I didn't make that up...)

Just do it, or maybe think about doing it first? You'll probably still do it anyway, but be more content in the knowledge that you dissected the issues, weighed up the components involved and thoroughly knew what you were getting into. The result of which will, of course be exactly the same as if you'd just done it, but you'll possibly have the smug satisfaction of thinking you in some way have control over things outside of yourself. Which is what we all really want anyway, don't we? But remember to tell people you just did it, cos over-thinking is for nerds and doesn't have a snappy slogan...

Humans Should Smile More

Okay...

I know I can sound like a real sad sack occasionally and take everything pretty seriously sometimes, but I now realise even if only temporarily that it's not really that bad. Things in general are actually pretty good, but fear, mysticism and most other natural emotions along with a tendency to take what we have for granted cloud our judgements, making us think that it is alot worse than it is. I mean there are lots of really shitty things happening on planet earth, but if we all just chill out and forget ourselves, I'm sure it will turn out fine. I mean it's not really gonna last that long so pretend it's a roller coaster and take it as it comes. Okay that doesn't really mean shit so go watch "Little Miss Sunshine" or some other bittersweet movie to give you some perspective. Or go on holiday and fill your mind and your days with lots of shit that makes you realise we're all whinging bitches...

Some people would rather see the world explode than lose the nail off their little finger...

Overlords of the Underclass

Just finished reading my new favourite book, so now I'm going to endorse it and generally recommend to anyone even slightly interested in the history of Christianity, but without too much of an entrenched or rigid view that may be challenged. Well actually you don't really need to give two tosses about God as long as you like a good book. Anyway said book is called "My Name Was Judas" By C.K Stead, so go get it now before I write another post about something else! I highly recommend it. It was so good I read it in like three days. Warning: May make you think about things!

Here is my humble tribute:
(For some reason most of the words start with the letter 'R'.)

Reunification repelled
Reckless revolutionaries wreck reality
Restless ravens ravage randomly
Rinsed raiders rise romantically
Real religion rallies resistively
Rights ruined remain removed
Roman rules ride rough-shot
Raising rebellion remembered resonantly
Roots really reassert ruthlessness
Ragged rabbles rouse resentful rabbis
Regional rivalries resist reason

I apologise in advance.

Echos of the Past

We all live in the shadows of history, whether we realise or not.
We are the remnants of what has come before...

Never give the crowd(s) what they want, or they will always expect it.
Never give the crowd(s) what they expect, or they will always want it.

The function of art.
The beauty of science.

(Just a bloggers note:
Don't expect that much newish stuff here in the next month or so
but possibly expect a flurry of bollocks say around mid March!
Sorry for any convenience this causes)

Bittersweet Rhapsody

Premise:

For Some reason I decided to steal selected lyrics to songs that I found vaguely interesting, without asking for any permission, but hey I'm not claiming I made them up am I? In my defense I have been listening to my generic MP3 player rather profusely, as I am taking many bus, boat and train rides lately. I didn't ask for your approval anyway. So just read the damn post or just skip to the next one already!

Song: Burn My Shadow
Artist:
Unkle
Lyrics:

I have burned my tomorrows
And I stand inside today
At the edge of the future
And my dreams all fade away

And burn my shadow away...

Song: I think I'm In Love
Artist: Beck
Lyrics:

What if it's wrong
To pray in vain?
What does it mean
To fake your death?
To wake up tainted?

Take a little picture in a photo booth
Keep it in a locket and I think of you
Both of our pictures, face to face
Take off your necklace and throw it away

Song: Magnet's Coil
Artist: Sebadoh
Lyrics:

The longer I try to keep my mouth shut
The sooner little brain is gonna boil
And if you turn back, just to fuck me up
I'll cut you loose and watch you fall
It feels good just to bitch about it
Scratch that itch until it bleeds
But I don't really want to lose you
And does it all depend on me?
It's always personal between us
But you won't say what's on your mind

Song: Life On Mars
Artist: David Bowie
Lyrics:

It's on America's tortured brow
That Mickey Mouse has grown up a cow.
Now the workers have struck for fame
'Cause Lenin's on sale again.
See the mice in their million hordes
From Ibiza to the Norfolk Broads.
Rule Britannia is out of bounds
To my mother, my dog, and clowns,
But the film is a saddening bore
'Cause I wrote it ten times or more

Disclaimer: (Just to end this amicably)
I do not necessarily understand what all or any of these lyrics mean, but I also may not be able to afford the sort of substances these artists were on when they created these gems. Though it may depend which country your in, to determine how much they cost.

Insufficient Data

The only way to make sense of the world is to create.
Wars fought in the name of 'Democracy' or "Freedom', still have the same effect on the victims. Who will not remember them favourably, no matter how much time passes...

Or so I've been told.

Man in the picture: The Shootings of 3rd May, 1808 - GOYA, Francisco
He died in a second , but has lived on for 200 years...
"For the first time war was depicted as futile and inglorious and for the first time there were no heroes only killers and the killed. "

One of Goya's "Black Paintings"

"Some of his visions seem to go deeper into the dark recesses of the mind than we are capable of penetrating. One, "Saturn Devouring one of his Children" (above), is one of the most horrifying pictures ever painted. His life built up to a climax, isolations and despair provided the conditions in which he produced his innermost masterpieces."

Sane reaction to an insane world?

Christmas In Cambodia

Advice to anyone wanting to travel that doesn't mind a few pot holes in the road or crazy traffic with no rules: VISIT CAMBODIA NOW!

Tips:
  • Contains the largest religious building (temple) in the world: Angkor Wat.
  • Was central base of the Khmer Empire, that in it's day was one of the greatest empires in the world. They put much of their labour and energy into building huge temples.
  • People have been put through the absolute shittiest historical circumstances imaginable, but are welcoming, friendly and bend over backwards to make you feel happy!
  • Less tourists and touters than Thailand!
  • Angkor Beer is great!
Thats quite simplified and general but true!

The Perfumed Garden

This is a very belated tribute to the Late Great Legend John Peel, inspired by the book by Mick Wall that I have recently demolished while on holiday. Peel of course was a British public broadcasting institution for almost 40 years. Playing heaps of new and experimental music right up until his sudden death in Peru in 2004. He would make a yearly list voted for by his fans called the festive 50, so I have complied my own list...

Top 15 Songs on my MP3 player with song titles related in some way to traveling:

  • In Transit - Albert Hammond Jr.
  • The Passenger - Iggy Pop
  • Crosstown Traffic - Jimi Hendrix
  • Journey - Mestar
  • Going Missing - Maximo Park
  • The Ride - Shapeshifter
  • Climatize - Prodigy
  • Station Approach - Elbow
  • Some Cities - Doves
  • How To Disappear Completely - Radiohead
  • Superstation - Bressa Creating Cake
  • We Used to Vacation - Cold War Kids
  • America is not the World - Morrissey
  • You Can't Go Home Again - DJ Shadow
  • As Serious As Your life - Four Tet
It's just something to amuse me really, the intro was you don't think it's a tribute to David Letterman or Hi fidelity, but definately read the Peel book if you get a chance!!

Oh well I mean consciously of course, as you could hardly help it these days.
A distorted view of history continues to be the basis of our morals.
If we don't get in tune with our surroundings rather than ourselves.
Well I don't know exactly I can only speculate wildly or make something up.
Hopefully creative or worthwhile enough to be preserved for posterity where no one will read it.
Well not for a while, when I've already gone on to the next fad or passing craze

Excess Baggage

Struggling with issues of insecurity, aggression,
emotions, time, eventual decay, ultimate collapse...
Find a place in the universe? hierarchy, structure, fascism,
the brat race, the system that tells us how to think, feel, act.
each given a ranking, who's above? who's below?
Shall we compete somehow to find out?
Wealth, strength, prestige, abilities, talents...
Build them up to knock 'em down!
all of the above?

This does not really make for the most entertaining narrative!

more like scraps of thought hastily (ha silly) compiled
slapped on to the internet before they can be forgotten
or destroyed by the wastages of life, whatever that means. wink wink nudge nudge

Pretty much if something sounds/looks good to me at the time I will investigate or over-analyse it for as long as I can be bothered, and this is all just a log of that. Not entirely sure why, but I've always been motivated by statistics, records, chronicles, the name on the spacies game at the local chip shop, name in the wet cement, something to be looked back on.

Basically however I can leave my mark in an anti-obvious why. So people will find it without too much fuss (perhaps with ease), but not until a wee bit later. By that time it may have less significance, and have less influence over any future events. But at least I can save it here in the old thought shed. Mental storage depot. That way I don't have to keep thinking about it, and can go on to the next thought worry free. Because I want to remember it, but the next thought may change things alot more, or be be slightly more sensational to the wider audience. But I was not really going for them... it was just for a future me (sans De Lorean ?) and those that will search just a little further. Dig just a little longer, curiosity driven, can work out the context from connecting the specifics, and vice versa.
If you think this is total bull$hi+ then fair enough, each is entitled to their own opinion, free speech yada yada, don't agree but defend your right to be a prick, yada yada. I'm not the thought police nark, but this is my wee bit of cyberspace not yours thank you very much so take your loverly opinion write it on your own blog or whatever and we'll all be fine!

Maybe I do have a vague, over complicated notion of the earth and existence in general. I dwell on the past/present and future, procrastinate how I want and just how I like. Muck about with the random things that most others forgot about or never noticed. Talk about something more than actually accomplish it.
I speculate on the unknowable and postulate on the unthinkable.
I can guess the future.
Rewrite the past.
Believe what I want and as I see fit. At least I admit it.
Then write an psudo-essay on it, with bad grammar, mispellings, made up words, poor paragraphs, lack of cohesive structure, narrative, conclusion, and/or purpose.
And loving every moment? Well at least partially enjoying if not hoping that this will come in handy at a later stage. Not caring too much though if it doesn't. It was never here.
So what if I live a dream, partially delusion resulting from thinking about so many different worldwide media/political/everyday events that you can only really focus on your own life anyway. So you will always have bias, entrenched racism, fear, xenophobia, contempt for the poor and weak, disregard for other inhabitants of the planet we won't meet, blind hatred, blaming natural disasters or unavoidable problems on an easy/marginalised scapegoat. Or are these just reasons or excuses that help to justify/maintain the status quo (infighting, nationalism, warmongering, elitist domination, arms races) and make sure that a worldwide unification or consciousness never develops? We're all citizens of the world, it just depends how far outside your turf you can see.

See there is no target market for a rant like that!
So if you read it your my key demographic!

Emotional Investment

Better to write for yourself and have no public,
than to write for the public and have no self. (Some Dude) Named Cyril...

Healthy levels of paranoia, 'Misuse of drugs Act.'

I probably wouldn't really want to read this myself
if I hadn't written it, but I did. So I it partially interests me.

To Be Confirmed

the only thing to x, is x itself.
the only thing to hate, is hate itself.
the only thing to love, is love itself.
the only thing to regret, is regret itself.
the only thing to live, is life itself.

Open Ended Apology

Sorry to anyone
I have caused harm to,
especially my
friends and family...

Even if I meant to
(at the time)
after much thought
and introspection
I now regret
all that I have done...
except for this
unless it offends somebody
or causes mental anguish...

Complex Inferiority

Looking for meaning(s) in all the wrong places:

How long will it last? Short term thrills.
Till the next scandal. Climax of conclusions.
Building up to the end? Separate existence.
All in our own world. Thoughts beyond control.
Obsessed with order. Hunted by Fear.
Imagined or otherwise. The same but different.
Selective views of the past. Written by winners.
Man attacks. Gods defend. Devils laugh.

Mutton dressed as Lamb. Delusions of reality.
Drop the Hammer. Make it so...

Bumper sticker of the week:
I started life with nothing, and I still have most of it left.

Lost and Profound

Some day people will be referring to now as the "good old days"...
Why are you preaching when no one's listening anymore?
Trust authority like you trust a snake!
