has the internet gotten a lot more vile and toxic? since... well whenever it was nice, I guess...
If you get bored...
try to imagine that there are apparently over 100 billion galaxies in the known universe...
more stars than grains of sand on all the beaches in the world...
more locusts in a colony than humans on the face of the earth...
and other astounding shit, that defies any frame of reference...
can't even fucken imagine..

Angstasy Ganstasy
Stuff you already should have known, but apparently I didn't:
I no longer have control over the past, as that is by very definition the past.
It has happened, already and cannot be changed
no matter how much I regret it or stew about it internally
but what I do have control over is my current reaction to said events
actions or inactions of the past
how I view it, what I give importance to
the myths I make, the facts I break
I can totally control how I act right now, if I choose to...
So the question is: will I? Choose to make the best of the now
or let the past act as an excuse to prejudice my thoughts?
and convince me that I can't do what I want to
because at one time previously I didn't do, what I now believe I should have
but really have no way of independently verifying if that decision would have created
a distinctly better scenario of life, or merely have created other challenges
anyway

Gardening Leave
If we all had the opportunity to flourish, would the world be a better place?
Or do we always eventually find a way to control and enslave the lives of others?
Chase your dreams or run from your nightmares?
Or pursue glory and find ruin...
If only it was all like the fairy-tales and not so much like the horror stories.
Current rebellion gets commodified and sold back to us in future
(Che Guevara lunchbox and matching t-shirt anyone?)

Title Goes Here
If your so great... then why haven't you become disillusioned by the state that the world is in?
My life is a series of pointless tasks, that I give meaning to... but most of the time I quite enjoy them.
But when I don't enjoy it, I find it hard to cope with... guess I didn't deal with enough pain as a child?
Hopefully I have dealt with enough in the intervening years, to set myself up for a pleasant time later on...
Well it makes me feel better to think that anyway... to a certain extent.
I guess you can tell when you're tricking yourself?
Maybe sometimes the placebo effect is the best thing for you.
Feeling good just makes you feel good...
But if you cheated to make yourself feel good, it might not last as long.
Guilt is personal, shame requires an audience.
But if other people are just upset with you for no reason, fuck them!
If they wouldn't be happy whatever you did, why should you change for them?
I guess we still do though, projecting an image ourselves we want them to see.
I'm the most self-conscious person I know.
It may not sound like it: but I do leave the house and function as a semi-normal person.
Wearing my conformity on the outside and hiding away these thoughts anonymously.
The winning argument will never be uncontested.
Even the most gallant revolutions, will cause suffering for some...
(then eventually get hi-jacked by zealots).
Pessimism? Realism? Self-delusion?
I think I'm trying to do the right thing, but maybe that's just for selfish reasons too?
There are still people I want to apologise to/reconnect with, but that first hurdle is stopping me.
I think I should, but when it comes time to do anything, status quo wins again...
Pro:crasti-nation-alisation-zone-ification!!
One tiny piece of information can totally change my mood.
I'm intrigued by statistics, jigsaw puzzles and lego.
I want to build a castle, but I think that is due to the book I'm reading...
Maybe if I set myself a deadline, I will have to do it...

Righteous Anger
We could make sure that everyone has food...
but it seems like in the process we get too worried about
potentially restricting the rights of people to own all the food
and make as much money out of it as they can
cos somehow production is more important than consumers?
Society seems to be set up for those that set it up...
I wonder what the weaker groups would want.
I must be a dirty commie...
Is it? not so much... what you do, but the reason that you do it?
Principles are great until reality conflicts with them.
Selective Morality
Why does it seem to me like:
drug crimes carry harsher penalties...
than sexual abuse and violent ones do??

Modern Nostalgia:
Back in my day you had to download your albums one mp3 at a time, through napster, iMesh, etc... on a dial-up modem that, meant you couldn't use the phone and made weird noises when it connected... but you try telling the kids that today and they wouldn't believe you...
Just listened to Quality Control right through for the first time in ages...
[{lyrics: Contribution - J5}]
Look we don't have all the answers, we're victims also
To the same situations, but man plans and the lord plans
And the lord is the best of planners...
So what's your contribution to life?
"I'm about to siphon you an ass-whooping."

If it's all in my head - there's nothing to fear...
Why can't my apocalypse dreams be funnier, or at least more fun??
Maybe you'll enjoy it more than I did...
It seemed like that time of the evening when a party either: naturally subsides into a collection of sleeping people passed out on various couches and floor; or it gets a second wind when an especially nostalgic song cranks up. Sparking enthusiasm that can form into movement or just -the usual- general debauchery ensues. This was happening but it wasn't actually a party (I guess that's a semantic debate) more a collection of people, brought together by circumstance, location and the day's events. People would usually have left but there was still a large contingent assembled, more through necessity than planning, comfort or for any other reason, than not wanting to be alone (or separated from a larger mass) right now.
I had no idea what time it really was, 3am at a guess? Most people in the room were still conversing in some fashion, even if a little nonchalantly or hardened. A natural reaction I guess to the day we'd been through. Emergency evacuations are never usually the most fun experiences of the year.
When I stood up in the doorway and looked at my phone I could feel the house (well old fashioned apartment building really) shaking again. Everyone was so over the aftershocks they were either too drunk to notice or purposely trying to forget.
The building we were in seemed okay, just as fine as when we had congregated there, due to it's proximity.
The last jolt seemed to be a bit longer and rougher than others and even raised some ironic shrieks from the cynical mass determined not to let it all get them down. They could suffer thinking later, that's a job for future us. Ignorance was bliss.
I don't know why, but something led me to go out the dark hallway lobby, toward the main door of the building.
Another stronger shake started, instinct or flight or fight led me out the door. I heard a female voice not too far away ask "Is the sky is on fire?"
Pretty soon I was outside in the cool dark night, looking for open space, as I looked up and realised I didn't really like the look of the tall building I was just in. Panic sent me out to the front garden, but suddenly I noticed all the trees had flames spreading through their long twisted branches. As wisps of flame and ash fluttered around in the wind.
On the front grass lawn looking up, it seemed like all I could see was trees, they were all around me. All with flames. I run out into the street. As I passed taller newer apartment blocks, I heard a disembodied voice yelling repeatedly and desperately "Put the fire out" the yelling was so piercing and shocking that I couldn't establish gender. Males and females can sound very similar when they are screaming for their lives.
I helplessly noticed flames in various areas above me and knew I could do nothing right now to help.
Ominously there were no sirens anymore, their calls had been heard all through the day as fire crews, ambos and cops had needed to slice through the gridlock to get to their awaiting emergencies. Had they been overwhelmed? Obliterated?
I stopped running for a moment and had my first unhurried thought for several minutes. I knew I had to go back to the party and get them all out of there, to somewhere safer. But where that was, I did not have a clue. Maybe a hill overlooking things with nothing above us? From my perspective the world was about to end and all I wanted was to watch it painlessly. But really there was far more that we would have to do, to get anywhere near safety again.

My sun is your sun
Just wading through a heavy tome at the moment
first time I've really taken on fantasy novels
let alone a full-on sevenish part series
of intense shenanigans and death
really enjoying it though
a tale of fire and ice
have finally got the discipline of regular reading back!
so might take me a few years to whiz through that then I can take on Ulysses, Infinite Jest, Gravity's Rainbow, Homestuck, etc...

The Present Has No Beginning/Ending
Dear sentient beings,
The Mission:
Continuing with my infrequent yet prolific attempts to define my surroundings in a vague yet reassuring, surrealist but humourous manner...
...while maintaining integrity and building tension.
Only joking... sucked in, shame!
Ok for realsies now...
Revolutions come and go; but nothing seems to change.
Once a freedom fighter gets in, power corrupts them (Mugabe, Gaddafi, etc.) or the tasks are just too immense for them to deal with, challenges too great to great for even the great to conquer (Mandela and gonna controversially slip-in Obama as an example there... Oh no they deer int!)
I don't want to be so cynical, but it's hard not to be. I'm basically forced to delude myself in small ways to prevent myself from getting too disgruntled/disgusted with everything, but don't we all (to some degree?) whether conscious or sub-consciously. Just don't all admit it. Otherwise if you dissect history and god-dayam present oppressive reality.
Either those in control don't know what to do, or they are benefitting from current circumstances. Western society is polarised and the majority live in poverty, slums, ghettos, hoods, etc... and that's just the first world. Who all pretty much gave up on Africa (as an example) back in the eighties, (sing along everybody!:) "heal the world..." so glad that's sorted now! Phew... "Back to cocaine and bad haircuts for us!" Ignorance is bliss and just a little too convenient for my likings these days.
I guess we can blame war or greed or corruption or god or any of that shit... just anybody but ourselves. Because, to be honest if you do start hating yourself, you're pretty much fucked, will take it out on others and be a self-destructive arsehole. Which is only a tiny-bit preferable to being an arrogant smug bastard, with cranium inserted rectally, who fucks things up but takes no responsibility afterwards.
This profanity is liberating! I usually don't get too abusive or sweary (at least I hope not) but lacing in a few expletives just as they would normally come out, make's it feel like I'm writing for 'Vice' mag!
Mainstream culture just wants you to forget. To sit down and be passive, but post about your progressive interests and pretend your supporting a worthy cause. Give you just enough freedom to make you comfortable enough to ignore the way the rest of the world suffers daily. The exceptions to every rule, get thrown back at us, as we're constantly reminded there couldn't possibly be any better ways.
Have a fucken great day and shit!
Yours blogfully,
Person who wrote this (and the others who passively support me, but have not signalled this at all)

"Anxiety is really a nervous energy that we all have. It serves various purposes, such as helping us to be careful and not take unnecessary risks, helping to motivate us to achieve things and helping us realise there are things to be confronted and solved. However anxiety can rise to levels that can feel tormenting and debilitating. This becomes intolerable, and a person then often uses avoidance as a way of trying to get rid of the anxiety or fear. This can then lead to a (Sid) vicious cycle that serves to fuel the anxiety and a person becomes demoralised and loses confidence in themselves."
"Depression often develops as a result of being stuck in a relentless cycle of anxiety and avoidance strategies. Pretentious Inconsistent Twaddle:
Pretentious Inconsistent Twaddle:
The PIT maneuver is a pursuit tactic by which a pursuing car can force a fleeing car to abruptly turn sideways, causing the driver to lose control and stop. The backronym "PIT" has a number of different meanings, depending on the agency using it or school teaching it. The most common meanings are: Precision Immobilization Technique, Pursuit Immobilization Technique, Pursuit Intervention Technique, Push It Tough, Parallel Immobilization Technique, and Precision Intervention Tactic. In each case, the meaning is clear, regardless of how the acronym is explained. Other names for the same maneuver are: Tactical Car Intervention (TCI), tactical ramming, legal intervention, and fishtailing. The technique is typically used by law enforcement officers as a safer alternative with which to bring car chases to a conclusion. Other methods of terminating a pursuit include Tactical Pursuit And Containment (TPAC) and the use of spikes (also known by various trade names such as stop sticks or stingers). Attempting this maneuver against a motorcyclist is extremely dangerous and is prohibited by most countries.
Obejectify Objects Objectively:
More than a body: Mind perception and the nature of objectification.
By Gray, Kurt; Knobe, Joshua; Sheskin, Mark; Bloom, Paul; Barrett, Lisa Feldman
Journal of Personality and Social Psychology, Vol 101(6), Dec 2011, 1207-1220.
Abstract
According to models of objectification, viewing someone as a body induces de-mentalization, stripping away their psychological traits. Here evidence is presented for an alternative account, where a body focus does not diminish the attribution of all mental capacities but, instead, leads perceivers to infer a different kind of mind. Drawing on the distinction in mind perception between agency and experience, it is found that focusing on someone's body reduces perceptions of agency (self-control and action) but increases perceptions of experience (emotion and sensation). These effects were found when comparing targets represented by both revealing versus nonrevealing pictures (Experiments 1, 3, and 4) or by simply directing attention toward physical characteristics (Experiment 2). The effect of a body focus on mind perception also influenced moral intuitions, with those represented as a body seen to be less morally responsible (i.e., lesser moral agents) but more sensitive to harm (i.e., greater moral patients; Experiments 5 and 6). These effects suggest that a body focus does not cause objectification per se but, instead, leads to a redistribution of perceived mind. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2012 APA, all rights reserved)

For Promotional Use Only
Recommendation of the week club:
Find four* new albums that you haven't heard before, but are pretty sure you will like, because (for example) you have already heard a single off them you really like or had it recommended to you by a friend or algorithm (e.g Pandora radio). Smash the shit out them (not literally, just play them to yourself all the time, or however much you have time to listen to music, headphones can help with this) cycle through them, until you can't take them any more and you're almost getting sick of them (or maybe just before that point). Basically when you are familiar with them and starting to feel like something new(er) Then find four* new albums that you haven't heard... la la la etc. THEN: repeat the process until you don't want too. Don't worry you won't run out of music. There's plenty of it in the world. There is far too much to get through and never enough time to filter through and find all the greatness. So might as well get into it eh?
NB: The word 'new' in this context doesn't mean brand new 2013 hot-off-the-press-type tunes droppin' on the D-floor shenanigans, just 'new' as in new to you, for example an old Bowie, Hendrix or Lennon album you never heard before, for some strange sad-but-incredibly-true reason, that you can only talk about in private. Whatever I'm not trying to be nosey, it's your life...
*Four is just an approximate really as the actual number is still up for debate.

Hands Up For Non-Fiction!?!?!
How not to tell a story - Part 39: The Autobiography
I grew up in a 3 bedroom house on a suburban cul-de-sac, in a quiet neighbourhood on the outskirts of a small city. With a park across the road that connected to a paddock, that contained collections of gorse, grass, short-cuts to bus stops, poplars, old car wrecks, rubbish, tree stumps, (for a time at least) 2 horses (one brown, one white), wasp nests (the insect not the racial grouping), lots of field mice, other assorted nothingness (I don't think it was ever very productive) and a house that some people said was haunted. Because it looked slightly neglected and run down. A throwback to the rural past of the area, that is not far from market gardens and lifestyle blocks, with huge driveways and nice houses. The paddoch through disuse had retained some features of a time before the post-war developments that rapidly expanded cities. The house was really just owned by a reclusive old shut-in family, that sent their son to a fancy school in town, but never seemed to do anything with the section of land that at one time must of given income to someone. I used to feed apples from the tree in our back yard to the horses in the paddock, when I was very young. I also like eating raw carrots. The end.

Challenge Inappropriate Behaviour
Really??
I think it would take many lifetimes (or at least more than one) to work this all out.
I mean really, it is a lot to take in, too much really. There are just too many people, opinions, artists, histories, ages, religions, etc. to really ever get to the bottom of things.
Doesn't mean we should stop trying to figure things out, to be observant or to seek knowledge.
But just realise that for almost everything 'truth' we learn, there can be a very convincing counter-argument.
So I think I know things and I will promote the knowledge I have or see to be helpful.
But my views are evolving continually, adapting to new things as I go.
I still like most the stuff I have put on here over the last eight years and although I think my perceptions are very different now, I still like my old posts and at least mostly agree with my observations.
Except for angry rants, but there is a time a place for those, as they can be necessary at times.
But probably better to focus thinking on something other than anger, as that inflicts on your own soul, just as much as the things you are against. better to try and keep it funny and not lose ya cool.
Even when you watch the news.

More stuff off Wikipedia (just cos)
Mechanical computer
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
A mechanical computer is built from mechanical components such as levers and gears, rather than electronic components. The most common examples are adding machines and mechanical counters, which use the turning of gears to increment output displays. More complex examples can carry out multiplication and division, and even differential analysis.
Mechanical computers reached their zenith during World War II, when they formed the basis of complex bombsights including the Norden, as well as the similar devices for ship computations such as the US Torpedo Data Computer or British Admiralty Fire Control Table. In the post-war era, most complex examples were quickly replaced by electronic versions, an evolution that culminated in the 1970s with the introduction of inexpensive handheld electronic calculators.
Noteworthy are mechanical flight instruments for early spacecraft, which provided their computed output not in the form of digits, but through the displacements of indicator surfaces. From Yuri Gagarin's first manned spaceflight until 2002, every manned Soviet and Russian spacecraft Vostok,Voskhod and Soyuz was equipped with a Globus instrument showing the apparent movement of the Earth under the spacecraft through the displacement of a miniature terrestrial globe, plus latitude and longitude indicators.
[edit]Examples
- The Antikythera mechanism, ca. 150 BC
- Stepped Reckoner, 1672 - Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz's mechanical calculator that could add, subtract, multiply, and divide.
- Difference Engine, 1822 – Charles Babbage's mechanical device to calculate polynomials.
- Analytical Engine, 1837 – A later Charles Babbage device that could be said to encapsulate most of the elements of modern computers.
- Kerrison Predictor ("late 1930s" ?)
- Curta calculator, 1948
- Moniac, 1949 – An analog computer used to model or simulate the UK economy.
- Voskhod Spacecraft "Globus" IMP navigation instrument, early 1960s
- Automaton - Mechanical devices that, in some cases, can store data and perform calculations, and perform other complicated tasks.
Documentary hypothesis
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
"JEPD" redirects here. JEPD may also refer to Jointly Exhaustive, Pairwise Disjoint.
The documentary hypothesis, (DH) (sometimes called the Wellhausen hypothesis), proposes that the Pentateuch (the first five books of the Bible) was derived from originally independent, parallel and complete narratives, which were subsequently combined into the current form by a series of redactors (editors). The number of these is usually set at four, but this is not an essential part of the hypothesis.
The hypothesis was developed in the 18th and 19th centuries from the attempt to reconcile inconsistencies in the biblical text. By the end of the 19th century it was generally agreed that there were four main sources, combined into their final form by a series of redactors, R. These four sources came to be known as the Yahwist, or Jahwist, J (J being the German equivalent of the English letter Y); the Elohist, E; theDeuteronomist, D, (the name comes from the Book of Deuteronomy, D's contribution to the Torah); and the Priestly Writer, P.[1]
Julius Wellhausen's contribution was to order these sources chronologically as JEDP, giving them a coherent setting in the evolving religious history of Israel, which he saw as one of ever-increasing priestly power. Wellhausen's formulation was:
- the Yahwist source ( J ) : written c. 950 BC in the southern Kingdom of Judah.
- the Elohist source ( E ) : written c. 850 BC in the northern Kingdom of Israel.
- the Deuteronomist ( D ) : written c. 600 BC in Jerusalem during a period of religious reform.
- the Priestly source ( P ) : written c. 500 BC by Kohanim (Jewish priests) in exile in Babylon.
While the hypothesis has been increasingly challenged by other models in the last part of the 20th century, its terminology and insights continue to provide the framework for modern theories on the origins of the Torah.[2]

Killer Apps and Mad Hook-ups Yo
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Imagination :
Imagination, also called the faculty of imagining, is the ability to form new images and sensations that are not perceived through sight, hearing, or other senses. Imagination helps make knowledge applicable in solving problems and is fundamental to integrating experience and the learning process[1][2][3][1][4]A basic training for imagination is listening to storytelling (narrative),[1][5] in which the exactness of the chosen words is the fundamental factor to "evoke worlds".[6] It is a whole cycle of image formation or any sensation which may be described as "hidden" as it takes place without anyone else's knowledge. A person may imagine according to his mood, it may be good or bad depending on the situation. Some people imagine in a state of tension or gloominess in order to calm themselves. It is accepted as the innate ability and process of inventing partial or complete personal realms within the mind from elements derived from sense perceptions of the shared world.[citation needed] The term is technically used in psychology for the process of reviving in the mind, percepts of objects formerly given in sense perception. Since this use of the term conflicts with that of ordinary language, some psychologists have preferred to describe this process as "imaging" or "imagery" or to speak of it as "reproductive" as opposed to "productive" or "constructive" imagination. Imagined images are seen with the "mind's eye".
Imagination can also be expressed through stories such as fairy tales or fantasies.
Children often use narratives or pretend play in order to exercise their imagination. When children develop fantasy they play at two levels: first, they use role playing to act out what they have developed with their imagination, and at the second level they play again with their make-believe situation by acting as if what they have developed is an actual reality that already exists in narrative myth.[7]
